But Thursday, the Carolina Hurricanes' coach said he didn't feel like he had a choice.

He gave his team the day off.

Players skating their way back from injuries, goalies and a couple of others took to the RecZone ice in an optional skate the day before tonight's 7 p.m.

"We noticed that his face was thinner and he was going to the bathroom more than normal,'' said Keith Suttle, a real estate developer in Boerne.

His 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound frame is not dissimilar to those of roommates Keith Shinaberry, Austin Wood and Jordan Danks.

There is a Suttle difference, however, since his uniform covers a catheter that is attached to his lower abdomen.

The catheter is connected to an ever-present insulin pump that helps him manage his blood glucose levels.
