ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Prior to yesterday's PSAL contest against Susan Wagner, the odds were certainly against Petrides sophomore Corey Epstein.

After all, the right-handed hurler was not only preparing for his varsity debut on the mound, but had the added weight of throwing after the Panthers' season-opening loss on Tuesday and a 19-game losing streak that included all of last season.

Fortunately, Epstein responded like a seasoned veteran, allowing no earned runs on five hits in seven strong innings as the Panthers topped the visiting Falcons 5-2 in Sunnyside.

The victory was Petrides' first since the final game of the 2004 season.

"I felt comfortable out there," said Epstein, who did have the luxury of not facing six Susan Wagner starters who were suspended by coach Bob Nappo for violating team rules.

"I wanted to work my fastball and go after them.

"This is a big field and they hit the ball, but I got some long outs and just did what I had to do (to get the win)." Epstein wasn't overpowering (one strikeout), but he didn't allow a walk and displayed resiliency - he stranded runne...
