Woman sues weight-loss centre, gets compensation

...It was also ordered to pay Anju Rs 2000 as compensation for mental agony and other costs.

Anju had enrolled at the Maninagar branch of the fitness centre on November 18, 2002.

Her weight then was 59.30 kg.

But a month after the programme and despite assurances from the fitness centre, she found no reduction in weight.

Three months later, she claimed, her weight had increased to 60.55 kg.

She said she continued with the course for four months but with no result.

Anju approached CERS, which filed a complaint with the Forum under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

Personal Point attributed Anju’s ‘failure’ in weight reduction to her not following its instructions and irregular eating habits.

The forum didn’t buy the argument and ordered the centre to cough up compensation.
