College Ave., Appleton, just east of Van Vreedes, in the strip mall that includes Baskin Robbins.

Amusingly, owners Darron Basham and wife Cristina Montesinos originally wanted to open a Ben & Jerry’s franchise.

But with more research, Basham realized that “a fitness-related business was a better fit.” It’s the first Wisconsin franchise of the Anaheim, Calif.-based operation.

ClosingFox Valley Military Surplus has started its going-out-of-business sale and will close in May.

The 14-year-old store, which sells things like battle dress uniforms, canteens, military metals and backpacks, is at 1104 W.

“It was a bunch of little things that added up,” said owner Dave Kauzlaric on his decision to close.

Two of the bigger reasons were the proliferation of lower-priced sellers on the Internet and local people hesitant to spend money unless they have to.

“The economy’s poor and people don’t have to spend their money here.

We’re not a grocery store or gas station.” Kauzlaric said he’ll return to his previous profession — constructing log homes up north.
