Confined to a motorized wheel bed, Fay had to teach himself to take letters that are upside down, backwards in a mirror reflection and jumbled, and gather them into coherent thoughts and words.

In much the same way, when his world was changed by a spinal injury in the early 1960s, Fay had to translate and transform this new world into one that was his own.

"It was like the Berlin Wall everywhere I went," Fay said, describing sidewalks, steps, and a general lack of accessibility that dominated landscapes urban and suburban 50 years ago.

Now much of that's changed, and in no small part due to Fay himself.

On March 24, Fay was honored by the Boston Center for Independent Living, a 32-year old organization of which is he co-founder, as a recipient of the Dr.

Marie Feltin Award.

He was one of three honorees at the event held in Boston.

While the story sits now in Concord, it began over four decades ago in the backyard of a Maryland suburb of Washington D.C.

Attempting an inverted move on a backyard trapeze, he fell and broke his neck.

That was the day life changed for Fred Fay.

Then for months following his injury, he lay in a Georgia rehabilitation hospital...
