The Capitals are not going to be in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Backup goalie Brent Johnson had 49 saves, as the Hurricanes produced the franchise's most shots in a game since the 1988-89 season, leading the Southeast Division cellar-dwelling Capitals to a 5-1 victory at the RBC Center.

The result, Washington's third straight victory over Carolina, postponed for at least one day the Hurricanes' chance to clinch their third Southeast Division title in seven seasons.
